Dr. Roy W. Spencer is a Principal Research Scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where he performs original weather and climate research with NASA’s latest satellite observations of the Earth.  He was formerly a Senior Scientist for Global Climate Studies at NASA, where he co-developed of the original satellite method for precise monitoring of global temperatures from Earth-orbiting satellites.  This work led to NASA awarding him and Dr. John Christy their Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.  Dr. Spencer’s work with NASA continues as the U.S. Science Team leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer flying on NASA’s Aqua satellite.  He has provided congressional testimony several times on the subject of global warming.  Dr. Spencer’s research has been entirely supported by U.S. government agencies: NASA, NOAA, and DOE.

Spencer authored the 2008 New York Times bestseller, Climate Confusion. His most recent book, The Great Global Warming Blunder, unveils new scientific findings that explode the conventional wisdom on climate change and reshape the global warming debate as we know it.  These findings were recently published in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

Lord Monckton is a business consultant and former policy advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. He has been a vocal critic of global warming proponents and the conclusions of the IPCC. In November 2006, he published in The Daily Telegraph a widely publicized article critical of the prevailing climate change opinions. After U.S. Senators Rockefeller and Snowe wrote a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of ExxonMobil asking him to stop funding scientists who reject global warming, Lord Monckton wrote a letter to the senators reminding them of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and calling on them to reverse their position or resign. In February 2007, he published an analysis and summary of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report on climate change.

David Rothbard is president and co-founder of the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) in 1985, and has served as chairman and president of the organization since its inception. He has provided vision, guidance, and oversight to help build CFACT into a global presence, with activities on three continents and the support of more than 40 internationally-recognized scientists and experts. Rothbard has testified before Congress and various state legislatures; is a regular speaker on college campuses and at policy gatherings in the U.S. and around the world; and has led delegations to numerous U.N. environmental summits including those in Cairo, Kyoto, Buenos Aires, the Hague, Johannesburg, and Nairobi. He is a frequent guest on radio and television talk shows, and his work has been printed or critiqued in such publications as Newsweek, the Houston Chronicle, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Washington Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Rothbard is also now spearheading the creation of model demonstration projects in impoverished villages in Latin America and Africa. Craig Rucker is the executive director and co-founder of CFACT. He is a native of Buffalo, New York, who received his Masters of Public Administration from the State University of New York at Albany, Craig Rucker is a co-founder of CFACT and currently serves as its executive director. For over 20 years, Craig has provided expertise to a wide range of government, academic, media, and industry forums. He serves as co-host of CFACT’s daily national radio commentary called “Just the Facts” that has been airing on some 125 radio stations from coast to coast since 1993. Manuel de Araujois a Mozambican politician for the constituency of central Zambezia. He was educated in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and in the UK at the School of Oriental and African Studies. He is currently studying for a PhD at the University of East Anglia.

Manuel de Araujo worked for Amnesty International at its headquarters in London as Campaigner for the Portuguese and Spanish African Speaking countries and then as The Campaign Coordinator for the Southern African Development Community Human Rights and Policing Project. Manuel de Araujo is currently the Deputy Chair of the International Affairs Committee in the Mozambican Parliament and also the Founder and Chairperson of the Centre for Mozambican and International Studies (CEMO).

Senator Fielding is a member of the Australian Senate, elected from the state of Victoria. He is the Federal Parliamentary Leader of the Family First Party in Australia.

Senator Fielding knows a lot about families – he grew up in a family of 16 children and is a proud family man himself. He has been married to Susan for 24 years and they have three children: James, 20, Campbell, 18 and Gabrielle, 15. Steve and Sue live in Wantirna South, an outer suburb of Melbourne.

Steve, who is 48, was born in Reservoir in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. As a child growing up he thought his family was the typical Aussie family – however Steve now realises that ‘typical’ is not the best way to describe the Fielding family.

Steve’s parents, George and Shirley, were both only children. But they just loved kids– so much so they kept having them. They stopped when they got to 16! Today, George is 81 and Shirley is 78. They still live in the family home at Reservoir, where they care for one of Steve’s sisters, Sandra, who has an intellectual disability. George worked at a hardware supplies company in the city called McPhersons. He started there as an office boy when he was 16 and stayed there 40 years. He did a lot of overtime and had a second job on Saturday mornings to bring in extra money. Steve has seven sisters and eight brothers, aged from 57 to 36. No twins or triplets. Steve is seven down from the top.

He and his siblings attended the local Keon Park Primary School and then Merrilands High School.

Shirley’s parents lived nearby and Steve’s gran used to stay with the family from Monday to Friday to help out. She slept in a fold out bed in the hallway which was packed up during the daytime.

The Fielding family didn’t have much money or material things but what Shirley and George did give their kids was plenty of love, time and an education. They taught Steve values such as honesty and respect for others and gave him things he’ll have with him forever; a sense of purpose, of who he is and what he could aspire to. They also taught him that happiness comes from family, not money. And they instilled in him the obligation to contribute to the community.

After finishing high school, Steve did a Bachelor of Engineering degree at RMIT University which he completed in 1983. He then started work at Hewlett Packard where he met Susan, who also worked there.

Steve later moved into management and executive roles with NEC and Siemens, and completed a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at Monash University in 1992.

Later that year Steve and his family moved to Wellington in New Zealand where he took up an executive role with Telecom NZ. They returned to Australia in 1995. Steve worked with United Energy and then Yellow Pages. For the last five years, he has been with one of Victoria’s largest superannuation funds, Vision Super (formerly Local Authority Super).

A passion for local issues saw Steve elected as a councillor to Knox City Council in 2003 and 2004. Steve stood as a Victorian Senate candidate for the FAMILY FIRST Party in the 2004 election and took up his position in the Senate on July 1, 2005. Steve thinks not enough time is spent discussing how economic pressures are affecting families.

It is well known that parents would like to have more children than they do and an Australian Institute of Family Studies report has found one-third of men and women will have fewer children than they would like. However, it seems that nothing can be done to change this situation. Many single incomes are no longer sufficient to support a family, but nobody asks why. Our tax-free threshold is below the subsistence level, but bringing the tax-free threshold up to this level is not the top priority for political parties.

All the political parties talk about ‘family-friendly’ policies, but it seems they are really market-friendly. You only have to read what employer organisations say about the obligations of employers to be ‘family-friendly’ to work that out, and if we did not get the message the managing partner of a leading national law firm removed any doubts when he said of his employees “You don’t have a right to any free time”. Steve’s hope is that the presence of FAMILY FIRST will start to turn this situation around.

H. Leighton Steward is a geologist, environmentalist, author, and retired energy industry executive.  He has written about the reasons for the loss of much of the Mississippi River delta (Louisiana’s National Treasure) and has given advice on how the nation can achieve “no net loss” of wetlands in the future; advice that has been accepted by the EPA and U. S. Corps of Engineers. Leighton was lead author on a book about nutrition and health (Sugar Busters) that gave advice on how to lose weight and prevent and or treat diabetes.  The book became a #1 New York Times Best seller for sixteen weeks and made a significant contribution to the changes that have occurred regarding the availability of no-sugar-added, higher fiber, and low-glycemic products in the super markets. More recently, he has written a book Fire, Ice and Paradise that is an endeavor to educate the non-scientist about the many causes of global climate change so that the reader will be better prepared to understand what they hear, see, and read about in the media and from the politicians. In recognition of his many environmental efforts, Leighton has received numerous environmental awards, including the regional EPA Administrator’s Award for environmental excellence.

He is Chairman of the Board of The Institute for the Study of Earth and Man at SMU, was Chairman of the National Wetlands  Coalition, and was twice Chairman of the Audubon Nature Institute.  Leighton currently serves on the boards or boards of visitors of  the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, EOG Resources, The Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Southwest Research Institute, and is an emeritus member of the Tulane University board.

Leighton’s current interest lies in helping to educate the general public and the politicians about the tremendous benefits of carbon dioxide (CO2) as it relates to the plant and animal kingdoms and their related ecosystems and habitats, and the general health of humanity.

S. Fred Singer is internationally known for his work on energy and environmental issues. A pioneer in the development of rocket and satellite technology, he devised the basic instrument for measuring stratospheric ozone and was principal investigator on a satellite experiment retrieved by the space shuttle in 1990. He was the first scientist to predict that population growth would increase atmospheric methane–an important greenhouse gas.

Now President of The Science & Environmental Policy Project, a non-profit policy research group he founded in 1990, Singer is also distinguished professor emeritus of environmental science at the University of Virginia. His previous government and academic positions include Chief Scientist, U.S. Department of Transportation (1987- 89); Deputy Assistant Administrator for Policy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1970-71); Deputy Assistant Secretary for Water Quality and Research, U.S. Department of the Interior (1967- 70); founding Dean of the School of Environmental and Planetary Sciences, University of Miami (1964-67); first Director of the National Weather Satellite Service (1962-64); and Director of the Center for Atmospheric and Space Physics, University of Maryland (1953-62).

Singer has received numerous awards for his research, including a Special Commendation from the White House for achievements in artificial earth satellites, a U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medal Award for the development and management of the U.S. weather satellite program, and the first Science Medal from the British Interplanetary Society. He has served on state and federal advisory panels, including five years as vice chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Oceans and Atmospheres. He frequently testifies before Congress.

Singer did his undergraduate work in electrical engineering at Ohio State University and holds a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University. He is the author or editor of more than a dozen books and monographs, including Is There an Optimum Level of Population? (McGraw-Hill, 1971), Free Market Energy (Universe Books, 1984), and Global Climate Change (Paragon House, 1989). Singer has also published more than 400 technical papers in scientific, economic, and public policy journals, as well as numerous editorial essays and articles in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, New Republic, Newsweek, Journal of Commerce, Washington Times, Washington Post, and other publications. His latest book, Hot Talk, Cold Science: Global Warming’s Unfinished Debate, was published in late 1997 through the Independent Institute.
